Why Do They Call It Burt’s Bees?
The products come from a company founded in the 1980s by a man named Burt Shavitz (1935-2015) and a woman named Roxanne Quimby.
Burt was a beekeeper who lived in Maine and sold honey and beeswax. He was recognized by his white beard and signature yellow truck. You can see graphic drawings of him on some of the Burt’s Bees products.
He got into beekeeping after finding a stray beehive and began earning a living selling honey.
Apparently, there was a strong tendency for thieves to steal his beehives, so Burt had to label them “Burt’s Bees”. That way he could track them down if they were stolen.
After Burt met Roxanne, he taught her about bees, and she started making the wax into products like candles, creams, lotions, and lip balms.
