The Story of the UGG Brand
Brian Smith was an accounting student and a surfer from Australia. In the 1970’s he travelled to California and was studying business at UCLA. Australian surfers wore sheepskin boots after surfing during cold mornings.
However, Brian noticed surfers in the US didn’t wear them, so he had an idea to sell them to the American market. He trademarked the name UGG. He went door-to-door to many shops in Southern California selling his boots. The shop owners were turning him down because they said his product wouldn’t work beside flip-flops and “board shorts”, which are long shorts worn by surfers.
Brian started selling his boots from the back of his van. Eventually the boots became popular with shop owners and even big retailers. Brian, with his partner Doug Jensen, founded a company called UGG Imports, Inc.
Most of his sales were in Southern California. However, over time, Hollywood started to notice UGG products and many celebrities wore them. The U.S. Olympic team wore UGG boots at the Lillehammer Winter Olympics in 1994.
In 1995 Brian sold his company to a company called Deckers Brands for $14.6 million. This resulted in a worldwide expansion of his brand and by the 2000’s UGG was a fashion icon. In addition to boots they sold slippers and stylish luxury items, that even appeared in Vogue magazine.
UGG has stores in Paris, Beijing, and Tokyo, and the UGG slippers are known for their comfort, style, and craftsmanship.

How to Care for Your Tasman Slippers
These slippers shouldn’t be machine washed. You can gently brush the surface to remove dirt. You can then follow up with clean water and a sponge to lightly dampen the shoe. UGG cleaners are also available.
Do not apply a cleaner or conditioner directly to your shoe but put it on a wet sponge and then gently scrub the surface of your slipper. You can buy a suede shampoo to clean the exterior or use a one-to-one mixture of water and white vinegar. Clean from the top using gentle circular motions.
Remove residue with a clean sponge and let your shoes dry naturally away from heat or sunlight. Put them in a cool, well-ventilated area for 24-48 hours before you wear them again. Then you can also apply a Sheepskin Protector.
You can also purchase a Sheepskin Freshener to eliminate odors and refresh your slippers.
